October Hocking Volunteer Event - Edible Garden Project
On Friday, October 2nd, Hocking staff took part in North County Community Services' "Edible Garden Project!" We were able to prepare several new garden beds, pick weeds out of existing garden beds, and help out with other various tasks that the garden needed assistance with. The garden is almost entirely dependent on volunteer assistance to maintain it's operations. Hocking recognizes the need for volunteers in our community and is proud to do what we can to help! We plan on getting back out to the garden very soon!
In March of 2010, NCCS started developing the Gardens at North River Road, in Oceanside CA. This garden is located on the property of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church on a ¾ acre lot adjacent to one of our seven preschools. The garden is both a production garden for child development center kitchens, growing 4000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables each year, as well as a community garden that allows families to rent small plots for their personal use. The Gardens at North River Road, provides opportunities for volunteers, families, and child development center children to learn where their food comes from. Preschoolers also benefit from a diet rich in fresh vegetables. Learn more about the garden HERE.
